Eni G. Njoku, PhD, is a space scientist specializing in remote sensing, formerly with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California. His career focused on the development of satellite microwave remote sensing for Earth observations. He was a member of the U.S. science team for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) and was the JPL project scientist for the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, launched in 2015 to study the Earth’s surface water distributions. He now consults infrequently on remote sensing, and writes where the interest takes him on subjects of technical and public concern.
Dr. Njoku has authored over 100 scientific and technical publications and is editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Remote Sensing. He served as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, and was a member of the editorial board of Remote Sensing of Environment.
Dr. Njoku is a Fellow and Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Geophysical Union, and was a member of the COSPAR Task Group on GEO. As recognition for his remote sensing accomplishments he has been awarded both the NASA Exceptional Service Medal (in 1985) and the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal (in 2016).
